The culprit isn’t rain itself — it’s how traditional footballs are constructed. When a ball is stitched, the needle creates tiny holes along every seam. A 32-panel football has approximately 1,800 stitch holes — 1,800 entry points for water. In 90 minutes on a wet pitch, a standard ball can absorb 20–40% of its own weight.
How Seam-Sealing Works
Seam-sealing is a post-construction process where a specialised barrier is applied over stitched seams, creating a waterproof layer that prevents water from entering through stitch holes. The result:
• Ball stays within 1–2% of dry weight after 90 minutes on a soaked pitch
• Consistent flight and trajectory throughout the match
• Predictable touch and bounce regardless of conditions
• Longer lifespan — internal layers aren’t damaged by repeated saturation
Why We Seam-Seal Everything
Most brands only seam-seal their top-tier match balls — the ones costing £80–£150. Budget and mid-range balls are left unsealed, meaning the balls that get the most use (training) are the ones most vulnerable to water damage.
